1. Piano Concerto No 21 aka “Elvira Madigan” – Mozart
The Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major, K. 467, was completed on 9 March 1785 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, It was featured in the 1967 Swedish film Elvira Madigan and thus has become widely known as the Elvira Madigan concerto.Neil Diamond‘s 1972 huge hit “Song Sung Blue” was based on a theme from part of the concerto.
2. Serenade No. 10 a.k.a. Gran Partita – Mozart
The piece was probably composed in 1781 or 1782 and is known by the subtitle “Gran Partita” in the 1984 film “Amadeus”, Antonio Salieri’s first encounter with Mozart. Salieri has not been impressed with Mozart’s boorish behavior before the performance, but as he looks at the music on the page, he describes the beauty of the solo oboe’s entry soon thereafter followed by the clarinet’s line, leading him to say, “This was no composition by a performing monkey. This was a music I’d never heard. Filled with such longing, such unfulfilled longing. It seemed to me that I was hearing the voice of God.” It is at this point that Salieri first questions how God could choose a vulgar man like Mozart as his voice; this question becomes a primary theme of the film.
3. Sheep May Safely Graze – Bach
Though played at Many weddings it was originally written for a birthday celebration, that of Christian, Duke of Saxe-Weissenfels.
4. Concerto for Two Violins aka “Double Violin Concerto” – Bach
Considered among the best examples of the work of the late Baroque period and among Bach’s finest works. He most likely wrote it between 1717-1723. We suggest the D minor Version.
5. Impromptus no.3 – Franz Schubert
Franz Schubert‘s Impromptus are a series of eight pieces for solo piano composed in 1827.
6. Come Ye Sons Of Art-Henry Purcell
Come Ye Sons of Art, AKA Ode for Queen Mary’s birthday, is a composition by Henry Purcell. It was written in 1694, and is one of a series in honour of the birthday of Queen Mary II of England.
7. Praeludium in G Major – Johann Kuhnau
Johann Kuhn (1660 – 1722) was primarily a composer today, he was also active as novelist, translator, lawyer, and music theorist, Much of his music, including operas, masses, and other large-scale vocal works, is lost.
8. Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini (18th Variation) – Sergei Rachmaninoff
Rachmaninoff wrote the work at his summer Villa in Switzerland from July 3 to August 18, 1934. The 18th variation, is by far the most popular, has been used in various movie and TV show soundtracks including: Somewhere in Time, Groundhog Day, The Good Wife, and many more.
9. Sonata in E major- Domenico Scarlatti
He was one of the few Baroque composers to transition into the classical period. Scarlatti’s compositions were influenced by the Spanish guitar as can be seen in notes being played repetitively in a rapid manner.
10. Nocturne for Piano No 8 in D Flat Major – Chopin
The Chopin nocturnes consist of 21 pieces for solo piano written by Frédéric Chopin between 1827 and 1846. It is clear that these short piano compositions made a noticeable and lasting impact on music and composition during the romantic period.
