Before he was one of New York’s most requested wedding and event DJs, Dave Swirsky was a three-year-old jumping on the bed to Meet the Beatles with his older brother Seth, who went on to co-write hit songs for Taylor Dayne, Al Green, Michael McDonald and Rufus Wainwright. Those records babysat the two of them for hours.
The obsession took hold for good when his uncle Art left for college and left behind a storage chest of 45s. Dave played every single one, then went looking for who wrote each song and who produced it. He’d make anyone who asked a mixtape, pulling across artists, genres and decades. By the time he was a teenager, his parents were handing him their house parties to DJ.
He was learning guitar at the same time, working through Dylan, The Byrds and The Beatles. At Syracuse University he formed Tricks with Frank DeMartini on guitar, now a successful film producer, and George Wolke on bass. Two songs Dave wrote picked up real radio airplay, a pair of ’60s power pop tunes listeners kept calling in for: “What You’re Doing to Me” and “I’m in a Groove”.
After college and a few forgettable jobs, Dave founded Expressway Music in July 1992 to put all of it in one place: DJing, live music and karaoke. More than three decades later he still leads it, with a deep roster of vetted talent working weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs and corporate events across the region.

The Music First Podcast
From 2012 to 2020 Dave hosted the Music First Podcast, sharing his own picks and sitting down with the artists, musicians and executives who shape the music industry. Guests included Tracy Bonham (“Mother Mother”), Elliot Lurie, who wrote “Brandy” for Looking Glass, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist Gene Cornish of The Rascals (“Groovin’”, “Good Lovin’”), and Bob Leone, an early manager of Lady Gaga.
